Introduction to Literature and Composition

Course Description
In this class, students will read and discuss great works of literature and develop their writing skills. They will work on sentence, paragraph, and essay structure and write academic essays with clear and precise grammar. Students will learn editing skills, increase academic vocabulary, and improve reading comprehension. Through the study of literature with a focus on writing, students will learn to better express themselves and improve their awareness and understanding of the world.

Summer Reading 2011 Project & Information
Summer Reading Books: 1. Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier 2. Kindred by Octavia E. Butler * If a student takes the summer school course and earns a passing grade, she will not need to complete the summer reading project. Class Books: 1. Vocabulary for Achievement, 4th Course 2. Elements of Literature, 3rd Course 3. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee 4. Gandhi: His Life and Message for the World by Louis Fischer 5. The Greek Gods by Evslin, Evslin, and Hoopes 6. Easy Grammar Plus Workbook by Wanda Phillips Outside Reading Books Students will need to purchase four additional novels to read outside of class. We will provide them with a list from which they may choose in the first weeks of school. | Honors English 9

Vocabulary for Achievement, 4th Course 2. Elements of Literature, 3rd Course 3. College Writing Skills with Readings, 8th Ed. by John Langan 4. Rosa Parks: A Life by Douglas Brinkley 5. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee 6. The Greek Gods by Evslin, Evslin, and Hoopes Outside Reading Books Students will need to purchase four additional novels to read outside of class. For the first semester, students in the honors English course will need to read Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë and Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen. Second semester, they may read other books chosen from the outside reading list. |
Supplies for English Class
The following are materials that you will be using on a regular basis in English class:
* 8½ x 11 inch, college-ruled notebook paper
assignments on smaller paper will not be accepted * blue or black pens for assignments
* one 2-inch wide, three-ring binder with four dividers * correction pens (bright colors)
* one BLUE folder with pockets (writing portfolio) * highlighters in three colors
* one mini-stapler * #2 pencils (mechanical are okay)
* a 3-ring hole puncher
Please have all of these books and supplies on the first day of class. Label your binder and ALL your books with your name. In order to submit written assignments during the year, you will need internet access and printing capabilities outside of school.
A Note about Plagiarism
As with all written work you will do at NDA, the content of anything your turn in to Ms. Soto's English class must be your own ORIGINAL work. You may not take words or ideas from websites, past projects, or any other source. Essays, projects, and any assignment that contains any plagiarism will receive a 0/F grade, detention, and a meeting with the Dean of Students.
